How can thrift fashion contribute to sustainability?
With the increasing number of discarded clothes ending up in landfills, we all are left with no option but to adopt sustainability and upcycling in the world of fashion. One such sustainable fashion practices include thrift fashion or thrifting. So basically, thrifting is the concept of purchasing second-hand apparels to prevent them from ending up in landfills or getting discarded.
But inspecting minutely at the thrift clothing market space
in India proves that the population of our country are yet to get familiar to
this new concept of thrift shopping. But the trends are on an upward slope. Several
online as well as offline stores have sprung up in the last couple of years.
Many of them have started helping people clear out their closet by posting
their old apparels on their social media page in return for a small commission.
Many thrift stores even does a quality checking before selling those second-hand
items. People have started accepting thrifting more and more, and I hope it
continues to grow this way. Even though, traditionally several Indian
households have this concept of wearing family hand-me-downs for years. Thrifting
is somewhat similar to it. Today, wastage is a major problem. It’s futile to
throw away stuffs that are well-maintained when they can be used by someone
again.
As more and more influencers and fashion bloggers are promoting this thrift fashion, it’s getting popularised. A lot of items are vintage and possesses a heritage charm to it. Thus, it’s an amazing concept to preserve them in their exact form. As per research, thrifting is mostly popular among the youngsters as most of them can hardly afford branded or expensive items.
There’s no stigma about this idea of buying and wearing second-hand clothing in the foreign countries but India still has to cover a long way to come in terms to this fashion trend. But studies show that within the next five years, India will achieve heights in adopting this concept.
